Fifth generation farmers, the McArdle family farm, which began as a small family supporting farm where all the produce was grown for self consumption and a few cows were reared to bring in an income has gone almost full circle. From the diversification to conventional mushroom growing in the late 70's, which lead to steady expansion over three decades to become one of Ireland's leading bodies in the mushroom industry to the growing of organic fruit and vegetables.
And aware of a pending downturn in the conventional mushroom industry, the threat of competition from Eastern Europe, and the stranglehold being placed on farmers by the multiples, we turned back the clock and diversified into growing organic mushrooms seven years ago and are now certified by the Soil Association Organic Standard.
With the next Generation on the way we began investigating alternative ways to utilize our farm land. Organic box schemes encourage quality; healthy eating with freshly picked seasonal fruit and vegetables. More recently we have supplemented the range to include salads and stir fry's, as John McArdle Jnr, explains:
"When my wife, Ann Marie and I found out we were expecting our first child, Jack. We looked at how we lived more closely. As we currently grew organic mushrooms, we extended our organic range to include organic salads and stir fry's, so we could combine modern tastes with the flavour that we used to get when we ate at our grandparents house with natural produce grown on the farm being the order of the day."
Orchard Organics have collaborated with Jenny Bristow, one of Ireland's most celebrated local good food ambassador's, TV cooks and cookery writers to develop a series of unique recipe ideas using the range of seasonal products available online as John explains:
"We are delighted to have Jenny Bristow on board as she can create new ideas and twists using the seasonal products we have available for customers and she is such a great ambassador for healthy eating as the way forward to a better lifestyle. Our future projects will include recipes for good quality food for children."
